Climate

The weather varies greatly depending on the geographical region. During summer (December to April) coastal temperatures reach 82C and in the highlands it is normally sunny and day most of the year with temperatures ranging from 48 to 65 degrees C. Rainy season in the highlands is from December to April.

Shopping

Handcrafted items are very characteristic of Peru. Woven rugs, tapestries, a;paca sweaters, ponchos, jewelry and many other products using materials such as leather, copper, silver and wood are made by native Indians using ancient methods. Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. but may vary city to city.

Entertainment

Night clubs, Discos and Penas (typical food and live creole entertainment and dancing) are found in every major city and even in some small villages. Casinos are widely spread out in the best hotels and through Lima.

Tipping

Restaurants include a 10% service charge, however it is customary to give an additional 5% to 10% of the total bill.

Electricity

Peru uses 220 volts, 60 cycles AC.

Measurement

Metric system is exclusively used. Temperature is measured in centigrade, weights in grams and kilograms, length in meters and kilometers and liquids in ounces and liters.

Taxicabs

Most cabs are privately owned and are identified only by the taxi sign in the window. Fares vary and should be asked in advance as no meters are used.

Passport

All US citizens must have a valid passport. Citizens of other countries are advised to check with their local Peruvian Consulate.

Time Zone

Peru is five hours behind Greenwich Meridian time. Same as USA Eastern time from November to March and Central time from April to October.

Money

The monetary unit is "Nuevo Sol" but USD are accepted throughout the country as well as major credit cards, travelers checks, etc.

Customs

You may bring into Peru free of custom duties various items for personal use or gifts not exceeding $300 in value. Cam corders, laptops, sports equipment such as fishing gear, bicycles, skis, tennis rackets, surfing boards, etc may be brought free of duty for personal use and should be taken along when leaving the country.

Major carriers from the U.S. to Lima (American, Continental, Delta, United, etc.) and TACA or AeroContinente from Lima to Cusco.
