A Taste of Guatemala (5days/4nights)

Wednesday - This itinerary starts off with you arriving in Flores (usually from Cancun or Belize) where you are met at the airport and transferred to Tikal for a full day guided tour of the site. You will visit the "Q" Complex, the Great Plaza, squared-off with the pyramids of the Grand Jaguar and the Masks, the Palace of the Nobles and Pyramid IV. Later, after lunch, visit the local archaeological museum and then transfer to Flores for your flight to Guatemala City and overnight at the Marriott Hotel.

Thursday - Early morning departure for Chichicastenango to shop the famous marketplace where the village streets are transformed into a massive, colorful array of stalls piled high with goods for sale and nowhere else in Guatemala will you find such a wealth of handicrafts, blankets, belts, masks, clay pots, gourds, machetes and locally grown foods. Overnight accommodations at the Mayan Inn.

Friday - Morning departure to Solola which lies on a high shelf 1,700 feet above Lake Atitlan and known as a great trading center. After shopping and sightseeing, transfer to Lake Atitlan for overnight at the Hotel Atitlan.

Saturday - This morning you will join the launch excursion to the picturesque village of Santiago Atitlan, the ancient capital and religious center of Tzutuhiles. Santiago's market stretches from street to street and it's here where you'll see Maximon,a mysterious religious idol, being closely watched over by an entourage of 'confradias'. Look for the exquisite cortes and huipiles worn by the women of the village. Later, transfer to Antigua for overnight at the Casa Santo Domingo Hotel.

Sunday - Today you'll take a sightseeing tour of Antigua, a city founded by the Spainards in 1543. Antigua is a beautiful blend of ruins, restorded Colonial buildings, stylish arcades, cobbled streets and a festive central market area. As time permits you'll visit La Concepcion, Palace of the Captains General, Church of San Francisco and the Jade Factory before returning to Guatemala City to your selected hotel.
